Department of Health - Guidance on Infection Control for Schools

Asthma

If your child suffers with asthma and has an inhaler we ask that one is kept at school at all times. This should be in date and prescribed to your child. Please hand this to your child's class teacher or to the school office. Inhalers and spacers should be labelled clearly with your child's name. An Asthma Card will need to be filled in and signed by a parent/carer. Find the Asthma Card here

Adrenaline Auto-injectors (AAI)

If your child has a severe allergy and is prescribed an AAI, the school requires at least two to be kept on site at all times. It is the parent's responsibility to ensure the school is provided with pens that are in date and clearly labelled. A Health Care Plan will need to be filled in and signed by a parent/carer and headteacher.

The school holds a spare AAI for emergency use in children who are at risk of anaphylaxis but their own device is not available or not working (because it is broken, or out-of-date). However, we do require all pupils to have their own prescribed AAI to be kept at school at all times. Any spare AAI(s) held by a school should be considered a spare / back-up device and not a replacement for a pupil’s own AAI(s). It is the school's discretion to hold spare AAI(s). See Guidance on the use of AAI(s) in schools below.

AAI(s) prescribed to pupils are stored in a central location in the School Office and are available to all staff to access in the event of an emergency. All staff are trained in the use of AAI(s).

Other prescribed medications

The school can only administer prescribed medications e.g. antibiotics. If your child requires medication during the day, that is not prescribed, then we will ask a parent or carer to come into the school to administer it. All medications must be handed to the school office by an adult and collected at the end of the day - for safeguarding reasons we are unable to hand over medication to children directly to bring home.

Illness whilst at school

Should your child become unwell during the school day with a high temperature, sickness and/or diarrhoea, we will telephone you and ask you to collect your child. If your child is unwell but not displaying any of the above your child will be monitored and if necessary you will be contacted to either collect your child or to bring in some paracetamol if this will help them feel better.

Green Lanes School have staff trained in first aid to deal with accidents or illness. Children who are sick or injured are made comfortable and given the treatment felt to be appropriate by the staff on duty. The child may be sent home with a slip to inform parents/carers if necessary. If the children are unable to continue school, parents/carers will be contacted and asked to collect their children.

Members of staff are not permitted to administer any form of medicine that is not prescribed to any child, nor are children allowed to self administer medicine (with the exemption of asthmatic children with inhalers and diabetic children).

If your child is or has been ill please consider the welfare of your own and other children when deciding whether they should return to school. Children should not attend school for 48 hours following the last episode of vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

NHS Direct have a dedicated webpage with information regarding Absence from School. https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/

A School Nurse visits the school regularly to monitor the children's health during the course of their time at Green Lanes. With parents/carers permission height, weight and vision tests will be carried out. The nurse will see individual parents if required.

Hearing tests are carried out separately by the Audiology Department.
