It’s been an incredibly busy first half-term for sports at Green Lanes!
Our first sporting event this year was the Year 6 Sports Leader Training. Mrs Moxham, the sports coordinator from Stanborough, came to school to support the Year 6 children with their leadership training. We were so impressed with the attitude of all the children during this session and the wonderful activities they created which they got the opportunity to test on the Year 2 children. Thank you to all the children who have volunteered to be Sports Leaders. They have made a fantastic start to their lunchtime sessions, and they are very popular!
Year 6 have also had the opportunity to take part in the first of our whole class sports event at Stanborough. During this event, the children got the opportunity to take part in sports such as boys and girls football, basketball, archery, tri-golf and indoor athletics alongside pupils from other primary schools in Stanborough’s sports family.
The next event of the term was the Year 5 fun run at Stanborough. The children took part in one of three races, and we were so impressed with their dedication. It was also an incredibly successful event as six children qualified for the Welwyn and Hatfield cross-country finals at Stanborough Lakes. Well done to Marvellous and Alice for winning their races and to Lewis, Leighton, Fisola, Alice and Layla for their excellent performance representing the Stanborough family in the finals and helping to achieve second place in the team event.
In October, 10 Year 6 girls took part in the Hatfield and District football tournament at De Havilliand. For many of the team, this was their first experience of a competitive game against other schools. The team work and support of each other was outstanding. Although we didn’t progress to the finals, we are very proud of the whole team. Following this event, we are pleased with the additional sign-ups for the girl’s football club which will now allow us to enter the Hatfield girl’s football league.
Following on from the success at the Year 5 fun run, it was Year 3's turn for their fun run at Stanborough Pavillion. The children took part in one of three races with one of them being a team event. We were impressed with their enthusiasm and dedication during the event. Well done to Moore class, who finished third in the team event race.
The next event in October was the boys' football tournament. The boys played incredibly skilfully against tough competition and narrowly missed out on a place in the finals due to conceding a last minute goal. The attitude and commitment towards their team from every single player was outstanding. We are very excited for the upcoming football league season.
Our final event of this half-term was the netball festival at Stanborough. Our netball teams have been taking part in coaching sessions on a Monday evening at Stanborough School during September and October and the festival was their chance to try all their new skills in a competitive situation against other schools. It was a great event, and it was lovely to see how much their confidence had grown leading to some fantastic results.
