Headteacher's update
A Heartfelt Thank You
Firstly, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents, carers, and staff who have supported our school in numerous ways over the past term. Your dedication and generosity have made a significant impact on our community, and we are incredibly grateful for your continued support.
Small World Toys Donation Request
We are on a mission to enhance our pupils' imaginative play and learning experiences by expanding our collection of small world toys. These toys are an essential part of our curriculum, helping children develop creativity, storytelling skills, and social interaction.
How You Can Help:
-
Donations: If you have any small world toys that are gently used or new, we would greatly appreciate your contribution. These can include toy animals, vehicles, figures, or miniature buildings.
-
Drop-off Location: Donations can be dropped off at the school reception during school hours.
Communication improvements
Thank you for your responses on the parent questionnaire. We are looking at ensuring you know how to communicate with us and the timeframes for us to get back to you. All communications such as emails come through the school admin@greenlanes.herts.sch.uk. Once received they are directed to the relevant person. You should receive a response ideally within 3 working days but 5 working days at the longest. The only exceptions are if you are requesting us to investigate something that might take longer or if that member of staff is off ill. If there is something confidential you would like to discuss it can go directly to myself at head@greenlanes.herts.sch.uk.
Thank you again for your unwavering support and have a great half term.
Warm regards,
Michele Johnson

This week in Foundation the children have been learning how to be safe online. The children learnt a song about what to do if they are worried about something they see or hear when they are using the internet. We have also been learning about algorithms and we practised by correctly sequencing the words in the song.
We are very short of socks and underwear to change the children into if they get wet. Please can you make sure they have spares in their bag in case of accidents. Thank you.

We have had a very busy end to this half term. In English the children have written their own poems about nature and in our Imagination Station we have been working on remembering how to write on the line whilst remembering our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops at the end of our sentences.
In Maths we have explored how to find the missing part when either one part or the whole is unknown. In Computing the children have learnt how to use tools in a word processing program to edit and change the text in a piece of writing.
Can I remind you to encourage your child to read their reading book each night for five minutes. It really helps make a difference for your child.

It has been another busy week for Year 2 again!! In Topic we have started to learn about mechanisms and how wheels and axles work together. We will then move on to explore how the size of the wheels and the positioning of the axles affects the movements of simple vehicles before making our own simple mechanisms.
In English we have been looking at the classic Poem, The Quangle Wangle's Hat by Edward Lear, focussing on finding the rhythm and the rhyme. We have summarised the verses and retrieved information from the poem. We have particularly enjoyed identifying all of the animals and looking at the nonsense words within the poem. In Maths, we started off the week looking at the nearest multiples of ten and ended the week rebalancing using the nearest multiples of 10.

Year 3 have worked hard and have finished our unit on written column addition. We focused on the exchanging of ones into the tens column and tens into the hundreds column – this also highlighted the importance of making sure our laying and place value is correct. We will be building on this when we return when we start to learn about written column subtraction. Within English we have been focusing on identifying dialogue within a text and have begun to use inverted commas ourselves within our sentences. We will using this when we begin to write our own narrative stories after the half term.

The children in Year 4 had fun with data loggers last week during their computing lessons and completed a Natterhub session all about keeping themselves safe online for Internet Safety Day.
In English they children have completed writing their stories from another culture and are half way through a unit understanding how to write an explanatory text. We have been using conjunctions, pronouns and technical vocabulary to creative an informative piece about teeth and the digestive system - we can't wait to read them all!
We have moved on from decimals and started a big topic on fractions in maths. With lots of rehearsing and consolidating their Year 3 knowledge, the children have also been learning new ways to add and subtract parts of a whole.
We hope you enjoyed them coming home and talking about/showing you their doors and hinges - they were really proud of them and we were really impressed with their design and technology skills.

I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the changing seasons. We’ve had an exciting time in Year 5, filled with creativity and learning. Here’s a glimpse into what we’ve been up to:
Maths: Fractions Focus
In Maths, we've been diving into the world of fractions. The children have been learning how to compare, add, subtract and Multiply fractions. Here are some interesting facts they’ve explored:
- Fractions represent parts of a whole.
- Equivalent fractions are different fractions that name the same amount.
- Simplifying fractions makes them easier to work with.
English: Exploring Language
Our English lessons have been full of fun as we explored poetry and language. The children have been learning about:
- Alliteration: The repetition of initial consonant sounds in neighbouring words (e.g., Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers).
- Puns: Humorous play on words (e.g., Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana).
- Collective Nouns: Words that refer to a group (e.g., a flock of birds, a swarm of bees).
Design and Technology & Art: Creative Projects
In DT and Art, our focus has been on innovative creators like Lesley Price and Levi Strauss. Inspired by their work, the children have been using recycled jeans to design and create their very own lunch bags. This project has been a fantastic way to combine creativity with sustainability.
We are so proud of the enthusiasm and creativity the children have shown in their learning. Thank you for your continued support at home, which makes all the difference.
We hope you have a wonderful half term, and we look forward to seeing everyone back, ready for more adventures in learning!

This week, year 6 started a new science topic about light which they have really been enjoying. So far, we have looked at how light travels, how it reflects and the colours that it is made up of. After half term we will be continuing with this, looking at why we see things as particular colours and what happens to the appearance of objects when they are in water.
In English, we also started a new topic and began planning news reports about a natural disaster, which we will be writing when we come back to school.
Today, we finished off our netball unit with an interhouse competititon during PE and we were very impressed with the team work and skills that the children showed.
Year 6 have worked so hard this half term and thoroughly deserve their weeks break!

World Book Day (Dress Up) - Friday 7th March
|
|
Join your local library today!
To celebrate World Book Day, not only would we like the children to come dressed up as their favourite book character, we would also like them to join their local library.
We are planning a trip to the library, in small groups, and in order to visit, parents will need to sign up. So that we know your child is registered, please complete the consent form on Arbor (under Arbor Trips). Once we know your child is registered with their library, we will arrange for them to participate in one of the trips. We will send further details of the trips once confirmed.

Online Safety / Cyber Security
Today, for our parent cafe, we were visited by members of the Herts Cyber Security Team (Herts Constabularly). If you were unable to attend today's cafe, we will shortly be sending out some information. In the meantime, they have recommended looking at the National Cyber Security Centre website for security advice on how to protect you and your family, and the technology you rely on.
